Effective artificial respiration is critical to survival in respiratory arrest. When the oxygen content of the blood has been depleted to the point that cardiac arrest results, the only treatment that is going to be effective are the immediate restoration of an adequate blood oxygen content. This requires the immediate delivery of a high oxygen concentration to the lungs. While the American Heart Association recommends 100% oxygen for artificial resuscitation, mouth-to-mouth breathing only delivers 16% oxygen, and oxygen concentration is insufficient to maximize the chance for a good outcome.<\/p>
